Most people only know Topsail Island in July. The island has a second season that very few people book: November through February, when the beach is empty, the bridge has no traffic, and a five bedroom house costs a fraction of its summer rate.
It is not a swimming trip. But if you want the whole family under one roof for Thanksgiving, a week of long beach walks in January, or somewhere quiet to ring in the new year, winter here is very good. Here is what the weather does, which holiday events are worth planning around, what closes, and what stays open.
Winter weather by month
These are the monthly averages for the Surf City coastal waters, alongside the National Weather Service climate normals for Wilmington, the nearest long-record station. The island itself tends to run a touch warmer than the mainland on a winter night.
| Month | Avg water | Avg high | Avg low |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | 66 F | 67 F | 45 F |
| December | 60 F | 60 F | 39 F |
| January | 57 F | 57 F | 36 F |
| February | 55 F | 60 F | 38 F |
Two things decide whether a winter beach day is great or miserable, and neither is on that table. The first is wind. A 58 degree afternoon with no wind is jacket weather and lovely. The same afternoon with a stiff northeast breeze off the ocean feels like 45. Pack a real windbreaker, a hat, and layers, not just a hoodie.
The second is sun. Winter days here are often clear and bright, and a sunny, calm January afternoon on an empty beach is one of the best things this island does.
November is the easy month: highs in the upper 60s, the water still around 66, and hurricane season officially over on November 30. December through February is the true quiet season, with hard freezes uncommon but a cold snap always possible.
The holiday calendar
The Topsail area does not run big commercial light shows. What it has are a handful of small town events that are free, easy to get to, and local. The town parades, the flotilla, and the Dolphin Dip had not posted 2026 dates as of mid September, so each of those gives the usual pattern and last year’s date. Confirm before you build a trip around any of them.
Surf City Christmas tree lighting (Saturday before Thanksgiving)
Surf City kicks off the season at Soundside Park, 517 Roland Avenue, with the tree lighting, Santa, live music, a kids’ zone, and food trucks. It was November 22 in 2025. If the pattern holds it lands on November 21, 2026, which makes it a good opener for anyone arriving early for Thanksgiving week.
Topsail Beach Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting (Saturday after Thanksgiving)
Topsail Beach, at the south end of the island, runs a lighted parade that steps off at 4:30pm, followed by the tree lighting at the Town Center at 630 Davis Avenue, with Santa, cookies, and hot chocolate from local businesses. It was November 29 in 2025. For a Thanksgiving week group, it fills the Saturday night before checkout. It is about a 20 minute drive south from Surf City.
Christmas Market and Flotilla (mid December)
The biggest event of the season. The Greater Topsail Area Christmas Market and Flotilla fills Soundside Park in Surf City with vendors, food trucks, music, and visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus from about noon to 6pm. As it gets dark, decorated boats leave Bush Marina in Topsail Beach and parade up the sound, arriving off Soundside Park around 6pm, weather permitting. It is free. It fell on the second Saturday of December in both 2024 and 2025 (December 13 in 2025), which would put it on December 12, 2026, if the chamber keeps the pattern.
Dress warmer than you think. You will be standing still by the water after sunset in December.
New Year’s Eve: the Burgaw Blueberry Drop
About 40 minutes inland, downtown Burgaw drops a giant blueberry on New Year’s Eve at 7pm, which is midnight Greenwich Mean Time, followed by a short fireworks show. There is live music and food trucks from about 5pm on the street beside the Pender County Courthouse. It is free, and the kids can see the countdown and still be in bed on time. Outside coolers and pets are not allowed. Burgaw also runs a lighted Christmas parade around its courthouse square in mid December (December 13 in 2025).
New Year’s Day: the Dolphin Dip
At noon on January 1, thousands of people run into the Atlantic at the Roland Avenue beach access in Surf City to wash off the old year. Arrive by 11am to find parking. Costumes are strongly encouraged, it is free, dogs are welcome, and shirt sales benefit Share the Table, a Hampstead nonprofit that feeds families across Pender and Onslow counties. The water will be somewhere in the mid to upper 50s, and nobody stays in long.
If Surf City’s crowd is too big, North Topsail Beach runs the Shrimp Dip the same day at noon at Beach Access 31, benefiting the Down Syndrome Network of Onslow and Carteret Counties.
Worth the drive to Wilmington: Enchanted Airlie
Airlie Gardens in Wilmington, about 45 minutes south, turns its gardens into a walk-through holiday light show. In 2026 it runs November 27 and 28 and December 1 through 21, with timed entry between 5:30 and 9:30pm. Tickets are sold per vehicle: $35 for a car, SUV, or minivan, and $65 for a 12 to 15 passenger van, plus tax and fees. Public sales open October 28 at 9am and dates sell out quickly, so buy the week they go on sale rather than after you arrive.
Closer to the house, Poplar Grove Plantation on US 17, about 25 minutes south, runs its Merry and Bright holiday lights festival on select nights from late November to just before Christmas. Dates and tickets are at poplargrove.org.
What closes, and what stays open
Here is what to plan around.
Closed or sharply reduced for the season:
- The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Center runs reservation-only guided tours on a seasonal schedule. In early 2026 it was closed to public tours for all of January, open only a couple of weekend dates in February, and back to Friday and Saturday tours in March. Tours cap at 15 people per slot. Book at seaturtlehospital.org, and do not promise the kids a visit before you have tickets.
- The Missiles and More Museum in Topsail Beach, the island’s WWII and Operation Bumblebee history museum, is seasonal. Its 2026 season ends October 9 and it reopens in April.
- Seasonal ice cream windows, beach shops, and some smaller island restaurants close for the winter or cut to a few days a week. This varies year to year, so call ahead.
- Christmas Eve and Christmas Day close a lot of places that are otherwise open. Shop by the 23rd.
Open through the winter:
- Daddy Mac’s Beach Grille, the only oceanfront restaurant in Surf City, stays open year round. It is closed Mondays and does not take reservations.
- Groceries. Surf City IGA on South Topsail Drive and the Food Lion on NC Highway 50 are open all year. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is the one day those aisles get tight, so do the big shop Monday or Tuesday.
- The beach itself. All 26 miles of it, with almost nobody on it.
For a rainy or raw day, our rainy-day guide covers bowling, arcades, and the indoor Wilmington list, and most of that runs all year.
What a winter week on Topsail is good for
Long beach walks. This is the main event. Walk the tide line at low tide in the morning, when the light is low and gold and there is not another person in sight.
Shelling. Winter storms churn the bottom and push shells up onto a beach nobody has picked over. Our shelling and shark teeth guide covers the tide window and which end of the island to walk.
Bringing the dog. Winter is when a dog gets the most out of this beach. See bringing your dog to Topsail Island for the rules by town.
Remote work by the water. A quiet house with wifi, a dining table to spread out on, and a beach walk at lunch.
Getting everyone in one place. That is why most winter guests come, which brings us to the holidays.
Thanksgiving and Christmas in a big beach house
Hotel rooms are a hard way to do a family holiday. Everyone scatters at 9pm, nobody can cook, and the kids have nowhere to go. A house with room for everyone solves most of that.
A few things that make a holiday week in a big house run smoothly:
- Order the turkey, or the ham, ahead. Do not count on finding a 20 pound bird at a beach grocery store on Wednesday afternoon. Order it before you leave home or pick it up on the mainland on the drive in.
- Assign the meals before you arrive. One kitchen, a lot of cooks. Give each family one dinner and the chaos turns into a rotation. Our family reunion guide has more on feeding a crowd and splitting costs.
- Build the week around one event. A Thanksgiving group should catch the Topsail Beach parade on Saturday night. A Christmas week group should catch the flotilla. A New Year’s group should put at least one brave person in the Dolphin Dip.
- Use the outdoor space. A 60 degree evening is right for the fire pit. Bundle up, light it after dinner, and let the kids make s’mores.
- Pack for the wind, not the thermometer. Windbreakers, hats, and a pair of gloves for the beach walks.
Doing it from Sound to Sea
Sound to Sea is a five bedroom, 4.5 bath house in Surf City that sleeps 11, which puts a family holiday at one address: two king suites with their own baths for the grandparents or the couples, a queen room, a twin room, and a bunk room for the cousins. It has central heat and air, a full kitchen, a dining table for eight plus counter seating for four, a fire pit under the live oaks, and parking for five cars, so nobody plays musical driveway when half the family drives in late.
Private beach access is about 400 feet from the door, close enough for a sunrise walk in a coat. Soundside Park, where the tree lighting and the flotilla happen, is a short drive across town, and the Roland Avenue access for the Dolphin Dip is a few minutes away.
November through March is our off-season, with quiet-coast rates for holidays, long weekends, and remote-work weeks. If you are weighing winter against the rest of the calendar, our best time to visit Topsail Island guide lays out every month side by side.
Why book direct
Winter is when it pays the most to have a real host on the other end of the phone. Book Sound to Sea directly and you get the best rate with no third-party service fees, plus someone who will tell you whether the flotilla date has been announced, which restaurants are open the week you arrive, and whether the wind is going to let you walk the beach that morning.
