Sound to Sea
Aerial view of Topsail Island in Surf City, NC with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the sound on the other

Area Guide

From the sound to the sea.

The quieter end of the North Carolina coast — Intracoastal sound on one side, open Atlantic on the other, Surf City right in the middle.

Topsail Island is a long, low barrier island and an easy, family-first stretch of coast without the crowds or the high-rises. Here's how we'd spend a week.

Sound side vs. ocean side

The magic of this stretch is that you get both. The ocean side is for morning walks, shelling, and the kind of waves kids can actually play in. The sound side is calm, warm, and protected — ideal for kayaks, paddleboards, casting a line off the dock, or watching the sky go pink at sunset. At Sound to Sea you're roughly 400 feet from your private beach access and 300 feet from a private sound-side dock and boat ramp, so you don't have to choose.

Things to do nearby

  • Surf City beaches & pier. Easy public access, a classic fishing pier, and gentle surf — the heart of a Topsail beach day.
  • Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue. A beloved local sea-turtle hospital and a Topsail must for families.
  • Soundside paddling. Kayak and paddleboard the calm water straight from the dock side of the island.
  • Stand By Me / Topsail history. Quiet beach-town charm, local shops, and the island's missile-program museum for a rainy hour.

Where to eat

Surf City keeps it casual and seafood-forward — fresh local catch, dockside spots, a good coffee in the morning and ice cream after the beach. We keep a running list of our current favorites and send it to every guest, because the good ones change with the seasons. (Grab it below.)

Getting here

Surf City is about 35–40 minutes from Wilmington (ILM) and roughly an hour and a half from the Jacksonville/Camp Lejeune area. Once you're on the island, everything's a short drive or a bike ride.
